Time, as the framework and structure within which a story unfolds, is one of the key elements in the final presentation of a text. The formation of narrative is virtually impossible without time, since narrative action—one of the most fundamental and driving components of any story—is built upon it. According to Gérard Genette, narrative temporality is shaped by three temporal components: order, duration, and frequency. This study, based on a descriptive-analytical method, seeks to examine the various temporal elements in the novel Jasr Banat Yaqub by Hassan Hamid through the lens of Genette’s theory. The analysis reveals that the author, by blending modern narrative techniques such as stream of consciousness and incorporating postmodern elements, disrupts the logical order of time to keep the reader’s mind engaged and free from monotony. Through frequent shifts to the past—and occasionally to the future—he enhances the complexity and appeal of the narrative. Flashbacks and references to prior events are among the primary temporal techniques employed in this work. Although future-oriented passages are less prominent than retrospection, they contribute to suspense and curiosity, encouraging the reader to continue the story. Techniques such as analepsis (flashback), detailed scene construction, and repeated frequency allow Hassan Hamid to portray the inner conflicts and concerns of his characters through the lens of time. Additionally, the use of extensive descriptions, narrative condensation and omission, and varied frequency patterns alters the pacing of the novel’s storytelling.
