When presenting the events, the writer relies on conflict, which is considered the main driver of the fictional work. Conflict is one of the main elements of the play and plays an important role in developing the events within the theatrical text. It is the differences arising from the contradiction of opinions and viewpoints regarding an issue or idea between the characters of the play. This research, based on the descriptive-analytical method, aims to study the conflict in the play “Yati’ al-Shajara” as a model of conflict in theatrical texts written by Tawfiq al-Hakim. This play is one of the first plays written in an absurd style in Arabic literature, and it talks about events in an absurd way. The most important findings of the research are the following: The play presented a new concept of the internal conflict and specific worldview of its characters. It seems that Al-Hakim in this play paid great attention to the psychological dimension of the characters, and this is one of the characteristics of the theater of the absurd. Al-Hakim skillfully used all kinds of conflict in the play, although the internal conflict was more evident in it. The conflict in this play was not between human wills, but rather it was a conflict between abstract mental positions and ideas that came in the form of diminishing dualities represented in dream and reality, fantasy and reality, immortality and annihilation, and these conflicting ideas emerged from the idea of life and art.
