Among the prevalent literary criticisms in the contemporary period, structural criticism of narrative works is prominent. The novel He Dreams or Plays or Dies by the Iraqi author Ahmed Saadawi is a socio-political narrative that depicts the conditions of Iraq over the past three decades through the personal memories of a character named Nadim. The issue of time in the narrative structure of this novel holds significant importance, as the reader perceives, from the opening pages, the temporal transformations and multi-layered nature of time within the story. Genette’s theory of narrative time represents one of the most comprehensive frameworks for analyzing narrative temporality in recent studies, addressing the formation of narrative time through three components: order, duration, and frequency. This study, employing content analysis and relying on Genette’s narratological theory, aims to examine time as one of the fundamental elements of the narrative structure of He Dreams or Plays or Dies, to assess the extent of the application of temporal components and to elucidate the author’s purpose in employing these elements. The analysis revealed that the author, through a non-linear temporal sequence and components such as foreshadowing and future projection, has created a narrative based on temporal disruption. Additionally, the author employs descriptive pause to slow down the narrative pace, uses summary and omission to accelerate it, and establishes a steady narrative tempo through dramatic scenes
