This study conducts a social semiotic analysis of Mourid Barghouti’s autobiographical novel I Was Born There, I Was Born Here, employing Pierre Guiraud’s theoretical framework. Guiraud’s approach to social semiotics, which examines signification systems as constitutive of social relations, categorizes signs primarily through the lenses of identity and politeness. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the research systematically applies Guiraud’s categories—including flags, uniforms, names, titles, gestural behavior, and proxemics—to the textual representation of Palestinian society in Barghouti’s narrative. The analysis demonstrates that Guiraud’s model provides a comprehensive framework for decoding the novel’s rich repertoire of social signs. These signs consistently index an authentic Arab and Islamic cultural identity, functioning to assert and preserve a distinct Palestinian social reality. Furthermore, the study reveals Barghouti’s strategic juxtaposition of these indigenous signs against the imported semiotics of Zionist settlers in the occupied territories. This contrast serves a critical dual function: it exposes the settlers’ ideological project of identity construction while simultaneously presenting an authoritative, counter-hegemonic narrative that resists the distortion of Palestinian community and experience.
