One of the significant topics in anthropology is character, which holds considerable importance in narrative writing, as narratology seeks to classify all events within a single typology. The Holy Quran pays special attention to the depiction of characters, addressing the portrayal of artistic and literary personalities, and has likewise employed narratives to describe characters in numerous instances. Surah Al-Kahf (“The Cave”) is one of the most important surahs of the Holy Quran in terms of character portrayal based on Greimas’ actantial model. Greimas is among the theorists who, by reducing the number of actants in Propp’s model, sought to present a comprehensive model for all narratives. The analysis and re-examination of Quranic characters significantly contributes to a deeper and more profound understanding of the Holy Book based on modern theories. This research analyzes the characters and actantial roles in the story of Surah “Al-Kahf” based on Greimas’ theory. Six main actantial roles have been identified: the Sender, the Helper, the Subject, the Object, the Receiver, and the Opponent. The aim of this study is to examine the function of the characters from a figurative dimension and to analyze their structure using a descriptive-analytical method. This analysis examines the situational events of the characters within the story and provides insights into their interactions and their impact on the overall narrative structure, as well as the understanding of the story’s deeper meanings.
