Symbolism is one of the most significant artistic mechanisms in literature, as it contributes to conveying abstract meanings and cultural values through signs and allusions that transcend the direct meaning of words. Among the most prominent manifestations of this symbolism in Arab culture are numbers, which go beyond their quantitative function to acquire deep semantic dimensions rooted in heritage, traditions, and religious texts—particularly the Holy Qur’an. As such, they have become an active component in shaping the aesthetic structure of literary texts.

In this context, the novel The Girl with the Blue Collar serves as a remarkable example that employs numbers extensively in constructing meaning. Here, numbers do not appear as neutral quantitative elements but as narrative–cultural mechanisms that direct events and highlight character transformations. This study adopts an analytical–descriptive method, drawing on Yuri Lotman’s theory of cultural semiotics. It identifies the key numbers with symbolic significance in the text, analyzes their meanings in light of their common associations in Arab culture, and examines their functions within the narrative structure.

The significance of this study lies in its focused examination of numerical meanings in The Girl with the Blue Collar itself, a dimension which—despite its strong presence in the text—has not, to the best of the researcher’s knowledge, been the subject of an independent analysis. The study seeks to show how this numerical presence helps organise the course of events, represent character transformations, and intensify the symbolic layers of the narrative, thereby offering a limited yet complementary reading of the novel from a cultural–semiotic perspective.

The findings reveal that the numerical system in the novel plays a symbolic and dynamic role, intersecting with deep-seated cultural meanings and showing how numbers are transformed into effective narrative signs that reflect the characters’ conflicts and intensify dramatic tension. Accordingly, numbers in the text are not merely a reflection of symbolic heritage but serve as aesthetic and cognitive tools for reinterpreting cultural concepts within a modern imaginative framework. This opens up a broader horizon for understanding the relationship between culture and number in contemporary Arabic literature.
