موضوع «الأنا والغیر» من الموضوعات التي نرید أن نُحلّلها في روایة «حین ترکنا الجسر» لعبد الرحمن منیف. سارتر و دریدا من الذین عندهم إسهام في هذا المجال. موضوع «الأنا والغیر» هو فرع قد نشأ أصلاً في أحضان الفلسفة وترعرع وبلغ أشده في ظلالها، ثم جاءت فروع معرفية أخری بعد ذلک، كي تنعم بهذه الظلال، وتساهم في سقایة هذه الشجرة الوارفة المتألقة لعلم الجمال وأن تضیف إلیها فروعًا جدیدة.لم یکن نمو هذه الشجرة الفلسفية طبیعیا، ولایسیر في حقب عدة عبر التاریخ، فكثيراً ما کانت تتداخل عوامل اجتماعیة، وثقافية وسیاسیة جامدة في تعلیق هذا النمو، أو منعه فكثيراً ما حاولت هذه العوامل أیضا أن تجتث هذه الشجرة من جذورها، لکن هذه الشجرة کانت تعاود النمو بعد ذلک بأشکال عدة، ربما بقوة أکبر وبازدهار أکثر تألقاً، حتی لو طالت فترة کمونها أو خفائها، وذلک لأنها أحد أبرز التجلیات المعبرة عن خصوصیة النوع الإنسانی وتمیزه عن غیره من الکائنات. عبد الرحمن منیف في هذه الروایة یستخدم بحث «الأنا والغير» وراء الشخصیة والحوادث في روایته حتی یبیّن لنا ما هي حقیقة الأشیاء.
