الواقعیة السحریة تعني الجمع والمزج بین الواقع والسحر والخیال؛ أي الواقع واللاواقع. العجائبية ظاهرة حاضرة في الروایة العربیة، یتجلی من خلالها اهتمام الكاتب العربي باستكشاف شكل كتابة الرواية من خلال عبور الحدود التقليدية للرواية مع فتح المجال لفئة التساؤل عن الواقع من خلال هذا الشكل الجديد من السرد. ظهر هذا الاتجاه الأدبي في الروايات العربية ومؤلفيها، ومن بينهم أحمد خالد توفيق (1962-2018 م)، وهو من رواد أدب الرعب في الأدب العربي المعاصر. كتب توفيق مؤلفات وروايات طويلة في هذا المجال. ومن أشهر رواياته هي "في ممر الفئران" المستوحاة من قصته السابقة "أسطورة أرض الظلام" رقم 68 من سلسلة کتاب ماوراء الطبيعة. يتناول أحمد توفيق في هذه الرواية القضايا الاجتماعية في مصر على ضوء أدب الواقعية السحرية؛ بلون الخوف والسحر والخيال والرعب والظلام والأسطورة وغيرها؛ لذلك يهدف هذا البحث إلى إعادة قراءة أحداث الرواية بالمنهج الوصفي-التحليلي بهدف الكشف عن الأبعاد الاجتماعية والسياسية للرواية. أمّا أهم النتائج التي توصلنا إليها فهي: إنّ الروائي أحمد خالد يصور المجتمع المصري وكيفية مواجهته بالفقر والجهل والظلام والخوف من الأعداء. يتحدث خالد عن مشاكل شعبه وهي اليأس والحرمان واضطهاد الأعداء مثل أمريكا وإسرائيل وغيرها. يشرح لنا الروائي كل هذا من خلال الواقعية السحرية بخيال واسع وتقنيات مختلفة، ويمزج عناصر الواقع مع الخيال والأساطير اليونانية مثل أوديسيوس، وبروميثيوس، وما إلى ذلك، ويصف الشخصيات الأسطورية والرهيبة بعناية.
